NWR Special Event To-Do List

  1. Find a Refuge near you.  Shouldn't be a problem - there are over 600 locations to choose from.  See the map or see the list by state.
  2. Get in touch with the Refuge Public Outreach Coordinator or Manager by phone. Explain what you want to do.
  3. If you have not done so previously, visit the site and check out physical locations for you operation.  The Refuge may be able to provide a shelter and power.  Look for antenna and grounding issues, opportunities.  Working mobile from a vehicle is, of course, your choice.
  4. Set up your Special Use Permit for your operation.  The form itself is pretty basic.  The Refuge manager here (Seney) actually filled in the form himself.  The one question that actually had substantial input had to do with "privileges requested".  I just put "Use two amateur radio transceivers on the amateur bands".  Include any provisions that make sense for your location: camping, parking vehicles, on-site after hours, etc., as you discuss this with the Refuge manager.
  5. Get a special 1x1 call if desired.  See the ARRL info and make the request on-line. Takes two or three days to get confirmation back on this.
  6. Notify me that you are participating, which Refuge, call you'll be using, and expected dates and times.  Keep me apprised of changes.
  7. Register your event with ARRL as a special event on-line by July 30th for the month of October (and inclusion in the October QST magazine; same for CQ Magazine and World Radio).
  8. See Suggestions page for more suggestions.
